Once in a while, you receive a gift that, at the time, you have no idea what a treasure trove you have been given. Years ago, my husband and I were given The Daily Light Devotional, by Samuel Bagster.
In time, we began to realize the value of this unique devotional. God continually uses this timeless classic to speak a word of wisdom in a time of need. It was my constant companion as I walked through the death of my own mother. Occasionally, it has strengthened our wobbling faith. Through countless dark nights, it reassured our weary hearts of the comfort of God’s promises as we prayed for the return of a prodigal.
Originally published in 1794, Anne Graham Lotz has revised and republished this beloved classic. Anne writes in the Forward, “Without fail, the verses selected for a particular day’s reading seem to speak specifically to the day’s need. In fact, God has spoken to me more often through the verses in The Daily Light than through any other book, except my Bible.” Miss Lotz has included a section in this devotional titled “Daily Light for Life’s Moments.” Various life topics addressed include: depression, divorce, hope, suffering, grief, reconciliation and forgiveness.
What makes the Daily Light Devotional such a revered classic? Perhaps it is in the unique sense that it is composed entirely of scripture. Most devotionals are the writer’s thoughts or commentary on a specific portion of scripture. I was once told that the best commentary on the Bible is the Bible. The Daily Light is just that; scripture commentary on a particular theme for the day. Each morning and evening devotion ” is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path”.
We have shared our love for The Daily Light by gifting it to many family members and friends. Borrowing from the Graham/Lotz family, we plan to present each of our grandchildren with this devotion on their tenth birthday.
